Hong Kong has a population of over seven million and around 8% of these are foreign nationals who have come to live and work in the city. For newcomers to Hong Kong, the pace and way of life may present a challenge not previously encountered and it can therefore be very helpful to gain an insight from other expats into how the city functions. Expat groups in Hong Kong can prove a very useful source of information.

Expat groups generally are not country specific and consist of individuals from all over the globe. They can provide valuable information on all aspects of life in Hong Kong.

There are a number of Hong Kong forums. Geoexpat and expatbriefing cover a wide variety of topics and is a valuable source of information.

A comprehensive list of a range of forums and activities open to everyone living in Hong Kong can be found here: https://hongkong.asiaxpat.com/forums/. Subjects range from hiking, volunteering, various sporting activities, and language lessons. There are also events for restaurant buffs, singles, vegetarians and wine connoisseurs.

For German speakers in Hong Kong there is a German language website that gives links to German language radio stations and also facilitates regular meetings for German speakers. You can find the details here: https://www.felsweb.com/msd/

The American Women’s Association of Hong Kong (https://www.awa.org.hk/) is a charitable voluntary organization for women supporting Hong Kong charities and schools. The AWA is welcomes all women living in Hong Kong and is not restricted to those of American origin. It organises regular activities and events throughout Hong Kong.

Generally, it has to be said that the expat groups in Hong Kong are well established and a lot can be learnt from their websites.

While it is a comfort to many foreign nationals to have such a link to their country of origin or other foreigners in Hong Kong, one must not forget that the experience of living in any foreign country is enhanced by stepping out of one’s comfort zone and discovering culture, way of live and all other aspects of daily living while in the midst of it. The knowledge gained by finding out for one’s self the challenges living in Hong Kong can present for someone not familiar with the country’s customs and ways of life are just as much part of the whole experience of coming to live in Hong Kong. The knowledge can then perhaps be shared with one of the many expat groups in the country…
